Born in Khazakhstan to Russian Army officers and educated in Israel, Mr. Ginzburg was accepted into the Institute of Art at the age of 13, the youngest student ever accepted into the Academy. Yankel graduated at the age of 19 in 1964. His paintings began to sell in Israel and then-President Johnson invited him to the United States where Mrs. Johnson and the Ambassador of Israel sponsored a one man show at the Washington Gallery of Art. When he arrived in the US, Ginzburg spoke Russian, Polish, and Hebrew yet no English however he became comfortable in the American art world through the passion displayed in his work and his own tenacity and charm. He has lived in the US ever since his show. He mastered English in a very short time and since his arrival in this country has achieved popularity for his unique vision. Over the years he has had many one man shows and his work can be found at galleries, art institutions, and museums around the world. Ginzburg’s work is firmly anchored in his diverse background and offers surrealist explorations on the themes of identity, home, and religion.
